- The company was originally founded in 1880 in Malmö, Sweden and known as N.P Martenssons Paraply Fabrik (Which means Umbrella Factory), and later became Paraplymårten A.B (Which means Umbrella Marten Inc.). Back then the company manufactured custom sun and rain umbrellas which were sold throughout Sweden and Scandinavia.
- In the late 1960’s, Olof Martensson the current chief executive officer and the 4th generation, converted the company over to the manufacturing of retractable awnings and canopies. The company was very successful in the Swedish and Scandinavian awning market.
- The company wanted to expand its market. In 1978, Olof Martensson emigrated and started Sunair® (Awnings Unlimited Inc.) in the USA as a subsidiary to the company in Sweden. Sunair® was the first of modern retractable awning companies to operate in the United States.
- Olof Martensson along with the fifth generation, still owns the company which operates both in Jessup, Maryland and Phoenix, Arizona. Subsequently the company in Sweden was sold, and the Martensson family became U.S citizens, and now focuses solely on the U.S operations.
- Today Sunair® is a nationally known U.S manufacturer and a successful company, focusing on the fabric shade business. Sunair® specializes in retractable awnings, solar screens, and specialty awning products, combining Swedish engineering with American manufacturing.
- Today Sunair® has over 35 years experience making & selling retractable awnings and other exterior shading products.
- Sunair’s products are sold nationally to distributors and dealers throughout the USA. Our products are manufactured in both Maryland and Arizona. Locally in the Baltimore Washington area, Sunair also sells directly to the public and installs awnings and screens.
- Today our products are all made in the USA. Our modern facilities have state of the art computer assisted fabricating equipment and computerized order tracking in the production process.
- Our Facilities are TUV certified, and is built for high production and future growth.
- Sunair® has built a reputation in the industry for a very diverse and high quality product line.
- Sunair® has fast, complete, and well packaged product deliveries. Customizing is one of our specialties.
- Today, Sunair® sews all fabric covers with Tenara® thread from W.L Gore Associates.
- Sunair offers 100’s of acrylic and mesh fabric colors, 7 standard frame colors, with custom powder coat frame color systems on premises in Maryland.
